Crane Fly Awareness in the Comox Valley
We are aware of concerns regarding crane fly activity in some lawns within The Ridge Development and the Comox Valley in general. The European crane fly is a common turf pest throughout Vancouver Island, including the Comox Valley, and its presence has been well-documented by local and provincial authorities.
Crane fly larvae, known as leatherjackets, feed on grassroots during the cooler months, and their effects often become noticeable in early spring. These pests are airborne in late summer and may naturally spread across healthy and newly installed lawns alike.
As builders, we ensure that all sod and soil used in our projects are sourced from reputable suppliers and properly installed following best landscaping practices. However, due to the widespread presence of crane flies in the region, new lawns—especially those less than two years old—can be vulnerable to infestation.
